Aptitude Tests/Job Sampling

These evaluate how an individual performs on specific tasks or responds in different situations. The tests are administered and scored in a standardised way and results are compared with others who have undertaken the same tests (norm groups). They can cover a wide range of topics including among others numerical reasoning; comprehension; spatial ability and verbal comprehension and all tests are conducted within a strict time limit. These tests can be either written or computer-based although with job sampling, the evaluation is based on practical tasks. For example applicants applying for a mechanics job may be asked to perform a wheel change or replace an exhaust and an administrative assistant might have to demonstrate his or her word processing abilities.

Personality Testing (or Profiling)

Contrary to popular belief, personality tests do not assess intelligence or ability but focus on a person's behaviour. The profiling takes a snapshot of the individual's behaviour that they often used subconsciously and is not physical but social and intellectual. The profiling is administered by completing a questionnaire either online or in hard copy format which consists of different types of statements that the person either agrees or disagrees with. The test is scored and a comparison made against norm groups (average responses). It is important to stress that unlike aptitude tests, there are no right or wrong answers. It is simply an assessment of how someone typically deals with the world in general. Examples of such tests include the NEO (Big 5)and The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) although their scoring methods and results differ because the NEO concentrates on personality traits whereas MBTI focuses on personality types.

NOTE: The validity of personality tests like the NEO is between 12 - 18 months because even though your "traits" don't radically change, you can learn to "manage" your personality and therefore the degree to which they manifest themselves and the way that others may "perceive" you will vary depending upon circumstances.
